It is said that a person spends 1/3 of his life in bed. Now, that is a lot of time! Surely we all want a nice bed to sleep on. A single or twin bed is fine if you sleep alone but a bigger bed is required if you have someone to snuggle. A queen-size bed is usually the choice more so for couples. Since there are thousands of choices out in the bed-frame market today, choosing which and what bed to buy could be a problem.
- “Know thy bed”: There are different makes and types of queen bed frame and it would do you good if you learn about them first before trooping to the local bed/mattress store. There are various sites that enumerate different options in bed frames but more often than not the examples gear more on the “style” and not the type. The link here presents a straightforward explanation. (www.wisegeek.com)
- Wood Frame: I love wood! It emits an ambiance of warmth and coziness. There are elaborate wooden bed frames and simple lines wooden bed frames and this website has them both. A clean and modern line bed is more practical for most homes. A modern bed is easier to blend-in in today’s homes. They are less bulky and definitely more affordable. (www.onewayfurniture.com)
- Wooden Sleigh Bed: This type of wooden bed is more elaborate in a sense since aside from the prominent headboard, a footboard is included. Aesthetically speaking, this type of wooden bed frame is a good choice more so if the wood used is not pine. Oak, mahogany and birch are good choices as material. The downside is that the footboard limits the length of the bed. If the bed is 80 inches (6’6”) in length then a 6-footer would have to sleep with his feet flexed to fit on the bed. - “Queen” Bed: And I do mean “queen”! This bed frame is so elaborate with carvings et al. Its design is suited for big master bedrooms decorated in Victorian style. This bed is quite expensive and it would really bode well only if the night stand, armoire and dresser are of the same style. If not, opt for another (cheaper) style. (www.furniture fromhome.com)
- Wrought iron bed: A wrought iron bed is more durable than the average metal bed. Beds made of wrought iron are more intricately crafted with its scroll, swirls, roses and twisted bars. Though more expensive than the average all metal frame bed, this type of bed is more tasteful and oozes with class and style.(www. carolinarustica.com)
- Combination wood and metal frame: This style is very affordable. The legs of the bed are wood while the other components are metal. The mattress support slats are made of wood too which means that the bed is quite sturdy. (www.furnishinghomes.co.uk)
- All metal frame bed: An all white metal bed features engraved castings and round finials for a traditional and conservative look. This bed is light and has wooden slats instead of a platform for supporting the mattress. The price for this bed is very affordable. However, the quality of the metal might not be that strong. - Bedbeams for Support: The problem with some beds is their weak mattress support. This is especially true with metal beds that have sparingly-spaced metal or wood slats. Weak mattress support would eventually lead to sagging mattress which in turn could make you want to sleep in another bed. The solution is to purchase some bed beams to help support the mattress and generally make the metal frame stronger. (www.thesleepshop.com)
- DIY bed frame: For the avid DIY-er, constructing a wooden frame bed is an option. You can start from scratch or opt for pre-cut pieces of wood ready to nailed, screwed and glued. There are plenty of websites to source for an easy wooden bed frame pattern. (www.woodgears.ca)
- Watch how is done!: (video) So, how easy (or hard) is it to assemble a platform bed? Here’s a video that shows a step-by-step way on how to assemble a wooden platform bed. The time elapsed in the video presentation indicates 2 minutes – but that is the speed- up time. Assembly time could have taken at least an hour. How do I know? It’s because it would take me more than an hour (and one day) to assemble a queen-size bed. (www.youtube.com)
